The 5 Foundation (Pillars) of Imaan (Faith)

عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ عَجْلَانَ أَبِي صَالِحٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع أَوْقِفْنِي عَلَى حُدُودِ الْإِيمَانِ فَقَالَ شَهَادَةُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ أَنَّ مُحَمَّداً رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَ الْإِقْرَارُ بِمَا جَاءَ بِهِ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللَّهِ وَ صَلَوَاتُ الْخَمْسِ وَ أَدَاءُ الزَّكَاةِ وَ صَوْمُ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ وَ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ وَ وَلَايَةُ وَلِيِّنَا وَ عَدَاوَةُ عَدُوِّنَا وَ الدُّخُولُ مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ
“I requested Aboo ‘Abd Allah (عليه السلام) ‘Grant me, the borders (principles/foundations) of imaan (faith). The Imam (عليه السلام) said: ‘(They are) To testify and affirm that there is no one who deserves to be worshipped except Allaah, to testify and affirm that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah and to affirm that whatever he has taught is from Allaah. (to affirm) 5 Salaah, to do Zakaah (charity), Sawm (fast) in the month of RamaDaan and Hajj of the House (of Allaah). To (believe) in the wilaayah of the of us, to love those who love us (‘A’immah from the family of the Messenger of Allah), to (show) enmity to enemies and to enter with the truthful ones (saadiqeen).

أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْكُوفِيِّ عَنْ عَبَّاسِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ بُنِيَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ وَ الزَّكَاةِ وَ الصَّوْمِ وَ الْحَجِّ وَ الْوَلَايَةِ وَ لَمْ يُنَادَ بِشَيْ‏ءٍ كَمَا نُودِيَ بِالْوَلَايَةِ فَأَخَذَ النَّاسُ بِأَرْبَعٍ وَ تَرَكُوا هَذِهِ يَعْنِي الْوَلَايَةَ

“Aboo Ja`far (عليه السلام) has said:  ‘The foundation of Islaam is upon five. (They are) Salaah (Prayer), Al-Zakaah (charity), Al-Sawm (fasting), Al-Hajj and al-Wilayah. And noting was proclaims like wilaayah was proclaimed. The people have taken four and they’ve abandoned this, meaning Al-Wilaayah.’”


  1. But since salat, zakat, sawm, & hajj are all furu'uddin (branches of religion), does it mean that wilayah is too?

    1. Since Salat is to be performed by limbs, Zakat by wealth, Fasting by avoiding food etc, Hajj by travelling to Holy city of Makah, likewise believing and accepting Wilayat is performed by heart, so it an action which is to be performed by heart, which is obligatory to be performed through heart thus this is mentioned under furuedeen here...

  2. Even if it is in the branches of the religion, if one doesn't believe in Wilaayah they are taken out of the fold of Islaam.

    If you do not pray, then you are not considered a Muslim. Prophet Muhammad (SAWAS): “The thing that turns a Muslim into Kaafir is to omit prayer intentionally or to offer prayer considering it insignificant and unimportant.”(Salāt, Wasaa’il al-Shee'ah Vol. 3 page 29)

    If you do not do Zakaah, then you are considered a kaafir. (41:7, plus a plethora of ahaadeeth regarding this and some hadeeth say that he dies as Jew or Christian)

    If you do not do Hajj, then you will be raised as a Christian or Jew (which are kuffaar). (from hadeeth)

    If you do not fast, then the spirit of faith is left from the person, hence making him a kaafir. “One who eats during day of Ramadhan (without any excuse) the spirit of faith exits from him.”

    So as you can clearly see, that all of these ahaadeeth support that not doing any one of these actions takes you out of the fold of Islaam.

    1. Not accepting and believing Wilayat of Imams (AS) will disqualify the all other actions performed, Wilayat is the qualifying factor for acceptance of deeds, no action is eligible to reach the state of acceptance without attestation of Wilayat... Actions performed without Wilayat of Imams (AS) is nul and void... Allah (SWT) is self-sufficient from worship of servants... So it is for salvation of self that we perform deeds...acceptance of deeds has certain criteria, the foremost criteria is Acceptance of Wilayat of Imam Ali ibne Abitalib (AS) and his infallible sons in his progeny... without which no matter how much deeds you have in your books, non will be accepted... rather he will thrown in Hell...

  3. Wilayat is from furu al-islam and it's one of the pillars of iman and without it iman is inadequate but to say that everybody who doesn't believe in it is kaffir is very extreme and contradicts quran and hadith.

  4. Hopefully Serious Sam will copy this and paste this on his blog where ALL we can find is copy and pastes of other people's work, even his attempts and claiming posts from Shiachat as his own work looool.

Anyway usool al-deen are clear and they are : tawheed and belief in nubuwat and hereafter and the rest like prayer and fast and hajj and zakat and wilayat are furu3 al-deen on which true islam was built but most people were not guided to wilayat unfortunately so true islam became just a madhab and that's why i reject calling tashayu or shi'ism a madhab because madhab implies that it's a view amongst others that can be disputed or rejected. this is one of reasons i hate it when people call themselves jafari bowing down to sunnis tactics in reducing true islam to just an other madhab. there's no such thing as jafari madhab/

  6. by the way the first hadith is weak because of mohamed ibn issa ibn ubaid and this man is a liar as far as i'm concerned because of extreme nakarah in his hadith whcih shows this man was a ghali indeed and a liar but he is weak according to :

    -abu jafar ibn babawaih

    -sheikh tusi

    -sheikh ibn al-waleed especially the narrations of mohamed ibn issa from yunoss.

    allmah alhilli: discredited him once and accpetd him an other time

    shaheed thani discredited him completely.

    but najashi rahimahollah said he's thiqat may allah forgive him and also fadhl ibn shadhaan who was most certainly fooled by this liar.

    anyway i don't accept his hadith in aqeedah.

    the second hadith is mursal because hasan ibn ali is from companions of ridha and abu ali al-ash'ari came after the time of the imams as he died in the year 306 hijri and there's no way he could narrate from companions of imam ridha(203 hijri)

    an other problem is abbas ibn amir and there's two :

    one from the period of after the imams and this is man is thiqat but there's no way a companion of imam ridha could narrate from a man who came after after the times of the imams.
    or he is abbas ibn amir from companions of kadhim (as) and this is him and this man is majhool.

    anyway i say this hadith is also weak and i go further and say extremely weak(corrections welcome)

    but the hadith has good isnaads like this one :

    عن علي بن إبراهيم ، عن أبيه وعبدالله بن الصلت جميعا ، عن حماد بن عيسى ، عن حريز بن عبدالله ، عن زرارة ، عن أبي جعفر(عليه السلام) قال : بُني الإسلام على خمسة أشياء : على الصلاة ، والزكاة ، والحج ، والصوم ، والولاية .
    قال زرارة : فقلت : وأي شيء من ذلك أفضل ؟ فقال : الولاية أفضل لأنها مفتاحهن ، والوالي هو الدليل عليهن ، قلت : ثم الذي يلي ذلك في لفضل ؟ فقال : الصلاة ، قلت : ثم الذي يليها في الفضل ؟ قال : الزكاة لأنه قرنها بها ، وبدأ بالصلاة قبلها ، قلت : فالذي يليها في الفضل ؟ قال : الحج ، قلت : ماذا يتبعه ؟ قال : الصوم ، الحديث .
    ورواه أحمد بن أبي عبدالله البرقي في (المحاسن) عن عبدالله بن الصلت بالإسناد المذكور

    sanad is good inshallah
