How to Cure Depression

Here is a aḥīḥ (Authentic)[1] adīth from Imām al-ādiq (عليه السلام) on how to cure depression.

My father[2] (رحمة الله عليه) has narrated to us, he said: Sa`ad b. `Abd Allāh[3] has narrated to us from Ayūb b. Nūḥ[4] from Muḥammad b. Abī `Umayr[5] from Muthanna b. al-Walīd al-Ḥannāṭ[6] from Abī Baṣīr[7] said,

al-Ṣādiq (عليه السلام) said to me, 'Do you become sad, worry, and suffer?' I said: 'Yes, by Allāh!' He (AS) said: ‘When that (happens) to you, then remember death, your loneliness in your grave, the flowing of your eyes on your cheeks, the breaking of your joints, the worms eating from your flesh, your misfortunes, and your separation from the world. For that is what prompts you to do (good) actions, and deters you from many of the desires of the world'[8]

Tanbih al-Khawatir

A question was asked regarding the book Tanbīh al-Khawāṭir, which you too can ask via the Contact Us form on the blog.

Question:
What is this book? Tanbih al-Khawatir

Answer:

The book’s full name is Tanbīh al-Khawāṭir wa Nazhah al-Nawādhir, another name for this book is called Majmū`ah Warrām. This is a book that mainly deals with akhlāq (mannerism) issues, and would be categorized as an akhlāq (mannerism) / tazkiyyah al-nafs (purification of the soul) book. The author of this book is Warrām b. Abī Fāris al-Mālikī al-Ashtarī (d. 605 AH), the book is extant and it has been published by many publishers. This book is originally in two volumes, but many publishers (i.e. Dār al-Ta`ārif in Beirut) have published both volumes in one volume binding. This book has not been translated in English.

Author:
Name: Warrām b. Abee Fāris b. Hamadān al-Mālikī al-Ashtarī[1]
Lineage:
From the lineage of al-Mālik al-Ashtari (companion of Imām `Alī (عليه السلام)), and he is the maternal grandfather of the famous scholar al-Sayyid ibn Ṭawus (d. 664)

Birth:
There isn't an exact date for his birth, but it is stated that he was born in the 6th century of Hijrah in the city of al-Hilla[2]

Teachers:
Sadīd al-Dīn Maḥmūd b. `Alī al-Hamaṣī & `Alī b. Ibrāhīm al-`Alawī al-`Urayḍī

Scholarly Opinion regarding him:
1.    Muntajab al-Dīn (d. 600) in his al-Fihrist[3] titles him al-Amīr al-Zāhid (The prince of asceticism) and calls him a good faqīh

2.    al-Sayyid ibn Ṭawus (d. 664) in his Falaah al-Saa'il[4]: "He is from who we emulate his actions"

3.    Hurr al-`Āmulī (d. 1104) in his Amal al-Āmul[5]: “Shaykh of great merit and importance”

4.    `Alī al-Namāzī al-Shāhrūdī in his Mustadarakāt `ilm al-Rijāl[6]: "Prince of asceticism, trustworthy, pious, and a good faqīh"

His Books:
1.    Tanbīh al-Khawāṭir wa Nazhah al-Nawādhir (also known as Majmū`ah Warrām)
2.    Mas'alah fee al-Mawāsi`ah wa al-Muḍāfah

His Death:
He died on the 2nd of Muharram in the year 605 in the city of al-Hilla[7]

About the book:
There are three major issues with this book:
1.    When reading this book, you would have a hard time believing that it was a Shī`ah book, because majority if not all the ḥadīth is either narrated by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) or Imām `Alī (عليه السلام). Many times it goes through major Sunni narrators such as `Ā’ishah, Abū Sa`īd al-Khudri, Ibn `Abbās. Rarely, if ever, does he narrate from the A’immah (عليهم السلام).

2.    All of the ḥadīth that have been narrated in this book is mursal (disconnect), meaning that there are no chain of narrators. Sometimes even the primary narrator is not mentioned.

3.    Hurr al-`Āmulī says this about this book, “It is good, except in it is inferior and poisonous (things)” (i.e. incorrect information)[8]

Some Chapter Titles: (Not in order)
1.    Chapter on Perfume and Scent
2.    Chapter on the Description on associating with the people and sitting with them
3.    Chapter on Names, Kunya, and Laqab
4.    Chapter on Traveling and Journeys
5.    Chapter on the Yearning for country of the family
6.    Chapter on Dhann (Speculation)
7.    Chapter on Lying
8.    Chapter on al-Gheebah
9.    Chapter on What has come about Gossiping
10.  Chapter on Anger
11.  Chapter on Condemnation of the World
12.  Explanation on the Remedy for Stinginess
13.  Chapter on the Condemnation of Riyaa' (Showing Off)
...And Many Others

Mannerism of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) - Twelve Dirham Story

Here is a beautiful Muwaththaq (Reliable) adīth that tells a story about twelve dirham that was given to the Prophet This allows us to see the great akhlāq (manners) of the Messenger of Allāh

Narration of the Twelve Dirham That was Gifted to the Messenger of Allāh

From Abān al-Aḥmar from al-Sādiq Abī `Abd Allāh Ja`far bin Muhammad (عليه السلام) said: “A man came to the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) and (saw) his (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) tattered garment, so he (the man) gave him (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) twelve dirham” So he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: “O `Alī, take this money and purchase me a garment with it.”

`Alī (عليه السلام) said: “I went to the market and bought for him (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) a shirt with the twelve dirham, and I took it to the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), and he looked at it and said: ‘O `Alī, I would like something other than this, do you think the owner will take it (back)?’ I (`Alī) said: ‘I do not know’ So he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Go and see’”

I went back to the owner and I said: “The Messenger of Allāh does not like this, he wants another (shirt), (please) take it back and return the money. So I (`Alī) went back to the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), and he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) walked with him (`Alī) to the market to buy a shirt, and he saw a slave girl sitting on the street crying. So the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said to her: ‘What is your issue?’ She said: ‘O Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), my master gave me four dirham to purchase for them a thing, but I lost it (the money), and I do not dare to return to them (without purchasing something or the money). So the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) gave her four dirham, and he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Return to your master’

And the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) went to the market to purchase a shirt with four dirham, he wore it, and praised Allāh (عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ). (on his way back) He saw a man naked and he (the man) said: ‘Allāh will clothe with the garments from heaven whoever clothes me’. And the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) removed his shirt that he had bought and clothed the beggar.

Then he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) returned to the market to purchase with the remaining four dirham a shirt, he wore it and praised Allāh (عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ), and on his return to his (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) house, he saw the (same) slave girl who was sitting on the street crying, so he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said to her: ‘Why haven’t you returned to your master?’ She said: ‘O Messenger of Allāh, I have delayed in returning to them, and I fear they will beat me’ So the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Walk in front of me and guide me to your master, and the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) went until he stopped at the door of the house, then he said: ‘al-Salaamu `Alaykum, O people of house’, and no one responded to him. And the Messenger of Allāh repeated the Salām, and no one responded and he repeated the Salām, and they said: ‘Wa `Alayka al-Salaam Wa Rahmah Allāh Wa Barakaatuh, O Messenger of Allāh’. So he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Why did you abandon answering my Salām the first and second (time)?’ So they said: ‘O Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), we love to hear you speak often’. So the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Here is your slave girl, she has delayed (returning) to you, but do not harm her’. So they said: ‘O Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) she is free because you came’ So the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Praise be to Allāh, look at what great blessing this twelve dirham is, this has clothed two naked people and has freed a person’

73 Sects of Islam

The famous hadeeth of the 73 sects is heard from both Shee`ahs and Sunnees in speeches all over the world. Well, here is a Hasan (Good) Hadeeth from Shee`ah books talking about the 73 sects, and about which one is going to the Heaven and which one is going to the Fire (i.e. Hell).

(Taken from my personal copy of Al-Kulayni's RawDah Al-Kaafi, pg. 182)

From Aboo Khaalid Al-Kaabulee (Kankar) from Abee Ja`far (عليه السلام): He said: (asked about the words) «God tells a parable in which there is a company of quarrelsome people and only one of them is well disciplined. Can they be considered as equal? » (39:39).

He (عليه السلام) said: «The quarrelsome ones» are because the first ones gather the different ones in his leadership and they did la`nah (curse) and did bara’a (disassociate) from each other. «The well disciplined man» is the first in the matters of his right as well as his Shee`ahs (followers).

Then He (عليه السلام) said: “The Jews after Moosa (عليه السلام) separated into 71 sects of which one is in Jannah (i.e. Heaven) and the (remaining) 70 sects are in the fire (i.e. Hell).
And the Christians after `Eesa (عليه السلام) separated into 72 sects of which one sect is in Jannah and the (remaining) 71 (sects) are in the fire.
And this Ummah after the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) separated into 73 sects and 72 sects are in the fire and one sect is in Jannah and from the 73 sects, 13 of the sects plagiarize/impersonate friendship and wilayah of us (the Imaams), and 12 sects from it are in the fire, and one sect is in Jannah, and the (remaining) 60 sects from the rest of the people are in the fire”

One of the narrators  in the sanad is a guy who isn’t commonly found in other isnaads, his name is Aboo Khaalid Al-Kubaalee, it is said in Rijaal Al-Kashee from Al-FaDl bin Shaadhaan that he was one of the five people who were with `Alee bin Al-Hussayn (عليه السلام) since the beginning. (see: Rijaal Al-Kashee, pg. 115, hadeeth # 184). There are other aHaadeeth that praise him very much as well.

Here is what Al-Majlisi says in his commentary of Al-Kaafee called Mir’aat Al-`Uqool:

“His name is Wardaan, and his nickname/title is Kankar, and in him is Praise, and that he is from the disciples of `Alee bin Al-Hussayn (عليه السلام) and that it is said that he believed in the Imaamah of Muhammad bin Al-Hanafiyyah for a while, then returned (back to Imaamiyyah), and he believed in the Imaamah of `Alee bin Al-Hussayn (عليه السلام)

A’immah (عليهم السلام) vs. Science Series (Part 1)

Here is an article made by Abu Abdullaah (from shiachat):

This is part 1 of many articles in the series titled “A’immah (عليهم السلام) vs. Science”. The reason I have titled this as such is not because our Imaams (عليهم السلام) go against science, rather I have titled this to show how far ahead of science our Imaams (عليه السلام) were. Part 1 of this series deals with sitting for an extended period of time in the bathroom can be one of the causes for hemorrhoids.

According to Science:

  • Constant sitting
  • Straining with bowel movements (from constipation or hard stools)
  • Diarrhea
  • Sitting on the toilet for a long time
  • Severe coughing
  • Childbirth
  • Heavy Lifting

“#7. Avoid straining at stool or sitting on the toilet for a long time.”

“The hemorrhoidal veins at the lower end of the rectum may distend or even rupture during a movement or after prolonged sitting or standing.”

According to some sources, the first traces in history of this theory of sitting for a long time in the restroom being one of the causes for Hemorrhoids was founded in the year 1959, December 28, 1959 to be exact.

(Here is a picture of a newpaper article that was written by Dr. T. R. Van Dellen talking about one of the causes of being prolonged sitting in the restroom)

How to cure Hemorrhoids - Science:
“Cold-Water treatment also helps the veins to shrink and tones up the walls. The treatment should be taken a day by sitting in a tub filled with cold-water up to the chin-level . Good Home Remedies for Hemorrhoids/Piles.
Cold compresses applied to the rectal area for about an hour before going to bed at night is also beneficial.”
