The Khutbah of the Imams

8. Muhammad bin Yahya from Ahmad bin Muhammad from Husayn bin Said from Nadhr bin Suwayd from Yahya al-Halabiy from Burayd bin Muawiya from Muhammad bin Muslim from Abi Ja’far عليه السلام, in the Khutbah of the day of Friday.

The First Khutbah:

All praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, and seek from His aid, and His forgiveness, and His guidance. And we seek refuge in Allah from the impurity that is in ourselves and that which results from our evil actions. Whomever Allah guides, then he cannot go astray.
And whomever He lets go astray, cannot then be guided.

And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He is the One without a partner;
and I bear witness that Muhammad is his slave and messenger, He chose him for his guardianship, and distinguished him with His message, and blessed him with the prophethood; (he was) a trustee of His veiled (unseen matters), and a mercy unto the worlds – the blessings of Allah upon him - Muhammad and his family عليهم السلام

I enjoin unto you, O slaves of Allah, to have Taqwa of Allah, and I frighten you with his punishment.
‘For Allah will deliver those who have Taqwa to their place of salvation; no evil shall touch them, nor shall they grieve’ (39:61).
He will honor those who had feared Him and thus save them from what they had feared,
and will consequently place them in comfort and delight.

And I entice you to (have hope in) the constant generosity of Allah,
and (yet) I frighten you with His punishment, which is not to be cut off (has no end),
and there will be no escape from it for the one He has made it compulsory upon.

So the world should not beguile you,
and do not extend yourself towards it,
for it is an abode of false pride,
Allah decrees for it and its people destruction,
so adorn (take unto) yourselves from it - what Allah grants you thereby,
from his Taqwa, and the performance of good actions,
for it does not reach Him from the actions of the slave - except that which has been done sincerely for Him – And it is not accepted except from the Muttaqin.

And Allah has already informed you about the stations of those who believe and do righteous deeds,
and the stations of those who disbelieve and do actions in other than His path (or for his sake).

And He said: ‘That is a Day for which the people will be collected,
and that is a Day [which will be] witnessed.
And We do not delay it except for a limited term.
The Day it comes no soul will speak except by His permission.
And among them will be the wretched and the prosperous.
As for those who were wretched, they will be in the Fire.
For them therein is [violent] exhaling and inhaling.
[They will be] abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure,
except what your Lord should will.
Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends’. (11:103-107)

‘And as for those who were prosperous,
they will be in Paradise,
abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure,
except what your Lord should will - a bestowal uninterrupted’. (11:108)

We ask Allah, who has gathered us for this gathering, that He bless us on this day of ours, and have mercy on all of us, for He has power over all things.

Verily the book of Allah has the truest of narrations and the best of narratives,
And Allah said: ‘When the Qur'an is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: that ye may receive Mercy’. (7:204)

So obey Allah and listen (hear Him in this) in order to receive His mercy.

[Narrator’s words] Then you recite a Surah from the Qur'an, and make a Dua to your Lord, and send salutations upon the Prophet, and make a Dua for the believing men and women,
Then you sit for a moment (short period of time), then you stand up and say:

"All praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, and seek from His aid, and His forgiveness, and His guidance, and we believe in Him, and rely upon Him. And we seek refuge in Allah from the impurity that is in ourselves and that which results from our evil actions. Whomever Allah guides, then he cannot go astray. And whomever He lets go astray, cannot then be guided.

And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He is the One without a partner;
and I bear witness that Muhammad is his slave and messenger,
He sent him with the guidance, and the Deen of truth, so that it may rise above over all other creeds, even though the Mushrikeen may hate that.
And He sent him as a mercy unto the worlds, and a bringer of glad tidings, and a warner, and a caller to Allah by His permission, and an illuminating lamp.

He who obeys Allah and His Prophet, it is the guidance. And he who disobeys,
it is (equal to) going astray.

I enjoin unto you,
O slaves of Allah, to have Taqwa of Allah –
(the One) who profits him who obeys - for his obedience,
And who disadvantages him who disobeys - due to his disobedience,
The one to whom is your return,
And upon Him is your account,

For having Taqwa is the will of Allah upon you, and those before you,
For Allah said: And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and yourselves to have Taqwa of Allah, But if you disbelieve - then to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allah Free of need and Praiseworthy.
(4:131)

Take upon yourself the exhortations of Allah and hold onto His book,
for it contains the most eloquent of exhortations, and the best of matters for the outcome of the hereafter.
Allah has taken it as a proof, so that those who perish [through disbelief] do so upon evidence, and those who live [in faith] do so upon evidence.

And the messenger of Allah has already clarified what was entrusted to him (what he was sent for),
so take upon yourself his inheritance and what he left behind him from the two weighty things –
the book of Allah and his Ahlulbayt, who do not lead astray those who hold onto (follow) them, and is not guided who leaves them,

Oh Allah send blessings upon Muhammad, your slave, and your messenger, the master of the messengers, and the leader of the pious, and the messenger of the Lord of the worlds.

[Narrator’s words:] Then you say:

Oh Allah, send blessings upon Amir al-Mu'minin, the trustee of the messenger of the Lord of the worlds.

[Narrator’s words:] Then you name the Imams after him until you reach your man (the Imam of your time).

[Narrator’s words:] Then you say:

Open up for him an easy conquest,
And grant him a dear victory,
Oh Allah, let prevail through him your Deen, and the Sunnah of your Prophet,
until nothing of the truth is hidden in fear - from any of the creation.
Oh Allah, verily we beseech you for an honorable rule (under him),
which reinforces Islam and its people,
And humiliates hypocrisy and its people,
And make us in it (that rule) from the callers to your obedience,
and the leaders in your path.
And give us sustenance of the Dunya and the Akhira.

Oh Allah, what we have known of the truth, then strengthen us enough to bear it,
and what we fall short of in (knowing from) it, then enlighten us (of this shortcoming) .

[Narrator’s words] Then he called Allah against his enemies and asked something for himself and his companions.
Then they raise their hands in supplication and each one asks for the fulfillment of his (legitimate) desires, and once they were done with that, He used to say

O my Lord, answer our call,

[Narrator’s words] And the last of his words was to say:

Verily Allah commands justice and goodness,
and giving to those near of kin.
And He forbids lewdness and abomination and tyranny, and exhorts you to be remembering of Him.

[Narrator’s words] Then he said:

Oh Allah make us of those who remember and profit from the remembrance.

Then he descended (from the pulpit)." (Sahih)
