Supplication (Du’a) When Asking Allah (SWT) for a Son (Child)

Hadith #1

Translation:  I once said to Abu ‘Abdullah (Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq), that I belong to a family that is extinct and I do not have any children.  He (the Imam) said, “Do Dua’ when you are in Sajdah, “Rabbi hablee min ladunka waliyyaa yareethunee rabbi hablee min ladunka dhuriyyatan Tayyibatan Innaka sameeu’-dua’a, rabbi laa tadharnee fardadawa anta khairul waritheen”.  He (the narrator) has said that I followed the instruction, then ‘Ali and al-Husayn (my sons) were born.”

Hadith #2

Translation:  Once al-Abrash al-Kalbi complained before Abu Ja’far (Imam Baqir), and said that he did not have any child and asked him (the Imam) to teach him something.  He (the Imam) said, Ask forgiveness from Allah in every day or in every night 100 times.  Because Allah says, “Ask forgiveness from your lord, He is forgiving... He helps you by means of your wealth and sons.” (71:10)

  1. The first hadith is da'if because Abu Bakr al-Hadrami is majhul according to the old scholars. This is because Khu'i only authenticates him because he is in tafsir al-qummi. We know that this is not tawthiq.

The second hadith is da'if as well, unless you accept the marasil of ibn abi umair.

  2. In regards to the marasil of ibn abi umair. Here are the du'afa narrators that ibn abi umair takes from: Yunus bin Zhibyan, Ali bin Abi Hamza al-Bata'ini, al-Hussein bin Ahmad al-Minqari, Ali bin Hadid. This alone should show that we must not accept the marasil of ibn abi umair.

This makes the second hadith weak.

  3. I didn't check the narrators I merely used Allamah Majlisi's grading in Miraat al-'Uqool these were the only 2 authentic Hadith that were in the section of doing Supplication for a Child that Majlisi authentic in Al-Kafi. This is why we cannot trust any scholars word no matter how great they are until we verify it through the standards of Rijaal. Even Allamah Majlisi can make mistakes. Thanks for pointing out the defects in the chain.
