Method of Istikhara

Here is a Muwaththaq (Reliable) hadeeth regarding the method of doing istikhaarah (seeking the best from Allaah) that was practiced by our Imaams (عليه السلام). This method is simple compared to other methods.

(Taken from my personal copy of Al-Barqee’s Al-MaHaasin, vol. 2, pg. 433, hadeeth # 8)

From Shihaab bin `Abd Rabihi from Abee `Abd Allaah (عليه السلام): “When my dad (Al-Baaqir (عليه السلام)) wanted to do istikhaarah about an affair, he would do wuDoo’ and pray two rakka`ah salaah, and if the housemaid (started to) talk to him. He said: “SubHaanallaah”. And he did not speak (reply) until he finished.”

  2. What this hadeeth is saying is when his housemaid would start talking to him, he would say "subHaanallaah", and he would not reply to her question or whatever it was until he finished the prayer.

  3. I also don't understand bro. So, according to this hadith, the istikhara is only done by 2 rakaat salat?

  4. Well this is one of the forms of istikhaarah, you do a 2 rakka`ah salaah, and whatever comes to you mine you follow it, this is what it is said in other hadeeth as well.

  5. That's not the purpose of this Hadith. The purpose was to demonstrate that you don't need an intercessor or an imam to perform istikarrah for you. Now find the duat that our prophet taught to his beloved companions may Allah protect them
