Five Sunnah Acts About the Head and Body

Here is a Muwaththaq (Reliable) hadeeth that gives us the sunan (pl. of sunnah) actions that are relating to the head and body.

خمس من السنن في الرأس و خمس في الجسد
Five from the Sunan about the Head and five about the body

From al-Hasan bin al-Jahm said, Abū al-Hasan Mūsa bin Ja`far (عليه السلام) said: “There are five sunan (pl. of sunnah) about the head and five (sunan) about the body. As for what is about the head, (1) siwāk (2) taking (shortening/trimming) the moustache (3) parting the hair (4) gargling (5) al-istinshāq (taking water in the nose for wuDū`). And as for what is about the body, (1) circumcision (2) shaving pubic hair (3) plucking underarm hair (4) clipping the nails (5) al-istinjā’ (washing yourself after using the restroom)”

  1. Salamu Aleykum,

Can the word for shaving be also translated as trimming short?

In other words, does this tradition make a distinction between shaving and trimming short?

  2. Wa `Alaykum Assalaam,

The wordings of this hadeeth are all different for different things. I have verified my translations with other translations in English, and various other Arabic-English dictionaries.

أخذ الشارب = Taking (shaving) the moustache.
حلق العانة = Shaving pubic hair
نتف الإبطين = Plucking underarm hair

If you are inquiring about the shaving mustache part, there are other aHaadeeth that talk about this as well.

  3. Thank you.
Could you please post a few hadiths on shaving the mustache issue.

The reason I inquire about this is that I cannot think of any Shiite scholar who shaves his mustache. On the other hand, I have seen many salafi and ahle sunna scholars, who do so.

I just want to be certain that by "taking" it is meant shaving, with a razor for example.

  4. Assalaamu `Alaykum,

Well actually according to Salafis it is Makrooh to shave the mustache, it is more Hanafi scholars who shave their mustache. But there are many hadeeth that talk about shaving the mustache.

al-Sistani used to have on his website in English about it being permissible to shave the mustache, but it isn't on his website anymore.
