Raising Your hands for Supplication

Here is a SaHeeH hadeeth going through two authentic chains that shows the etiquette of how you should do your supplications.


مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ ع عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فَمَا اسْتَكانُوا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَ ما يَتَضَرَّعُونَ (المؤمنون -: 76 -) قَالَ الِاسْتِكَانَةُ هِيَ الْخُضُوعُ وَ التَّضَرُّعُ رَفْعُ الْيَدَيْنِ وَ التَّضَرُّعُ بِهِمَا
From Muhammad bin Muslim said, I asked Abaa Ja`far (عليه السلام) about the words of Allaah (عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ) “but they did not istikaanoo to their lord nor yataDarra`oon"(23:76), he (عليه السلام) said: “Al-Istikaanah is submission and al-taDarru` is raising both hands and begging by them

Second authentic chain of narrators:

وَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ مِثْلَهُ

1.       Al-Majlisi said this hadeeth is Hasan Kal-SaHeeH (Good like a SaHeeH)
