12 Imaams Mentioned by Name Explicitly in a SaHeeH Hadeeth

I would like show a hadeeth that mentioned the 12 Imaams explicitly by name one after another. This is a question posed to us, if there is any SaHeeH hadeeth that EXPLICITLY mentioned the names of the 12 Imaams one after another.

This is posed to us, because of the many different sects of Shee`ah Islaam, especially after the 6th Imaam
Sometimes the major SaHabas of the Imaams went to another supposed “Imaam”.

One a side note, this hadeeth can also be daleel (proof) for the existence of Prophet Al-Khidr
عليه السلام, and that he is still alive.

This hadeeth is beautiful put by our Imaam. Here is the hadeeth.

Aboo Ja`far Al-Thaanee (Imaam Al-Taqee Al-Jawaad) said: "Once Amir al-Mu’minin `Alee عليه السلام came with al-Hassan and al-Husayn and he was holding the hand of Salman for support. He entered the sacred Mosque in Makka and sat down. Then a good looking and well dressed man came. He offered the greeting of peace to Amir al-Mu’minin `Alee عليه السلام who answered his greetings likewise and he sat down. He then said, "I will ask you three questions. If you would answer them I will acknowledge that the people who have acted against you in the matters of leadership after the Holy Prophet (s.a) they have acted against their own selves. Their actions have taken away peace from them in this world as well in the next life. If it would be otherwise, (you can answer) then you and those people will be the same." Amir al-Mu’minin`Alee عليه السلام said, "Ask whatever you would like." He said, "Tell about the man who sleeps. Where does his spirit go?" Tell about the man, how he remembers and forgets? Tell me about the man how do his children become similar to the aunts and uncles?" Amir al-Mu’minin `Alee عليه السلام turned to al-Hassan and said, "O Aboo Muhammad, answer him." The narrator has said that al-Hassan answered his questions. The man then said,

"I testify that there is no lord besides Allah and I continue to testify to this fact. I testify that Muhammad صلّى الله عليه وآله is the Messenger of Allah and I continue to testify to this fact I testify that you are the executor of the will of the Messenger of Allah and that you are the in charge of this task ((Leadership with Divine Authority) with His authorization." He pointed out to Amir al-Mu’minin عليه السلام with his hand. He then said, "I continue to testify to this fact." "I testify that you are the executor of his (Amir al-Mu’minin’s عليه السلام will and the in charge of this task ((Leadership with Divine Authority) by His authorization after him (Amir alMu’minin عليه السلام " He pointed out with his hand to al-Hassan عليه السلام. Then He then said, "I continue to testify to this fact."

"I testify that al-Husayn ibn `Alee عليه السلام will be the executor of the will of his brother and the in charge of this task ((Leadership with Divine Authority) with His authorization after him.

"I testify in support of `Alee ibn al-Husayn عليه السلام that he will be the in charge of the task of al-Husayn after him.

"I testify that Muhammad ibn `Alee will be the in charge of the task of `Alee ibn al-Husayn عليه السلام after him.

"I testify that Ja‘far ibn Muhammad عليه السلام will be the in charge of the task of Muhammad ibn `Alee عليه السلام.

"I testify that Moosa will be the in charge of the task of Ja‘far ibn Muhammad after him.

"I testify that `Alee ibn Moosa will be the in charge of the task of Moosa ibn Ja‘far عليه السلام.

"I testify that Muhammad ibn `Alee عليه السلام will be the in charge of the task of `Alee ibn Moosa عليه السلام after him.

"I testify that `Alee ibn Muhammad will be the in charge of the task of Muhammad ibn `Alee عليه السلام after him.

"I testify that al-Hassan ibn `Alee عليه السلام will be the in charge of the task of `Alee ibn Muhammad عليه السلام after him.

"I testify in support of a man from the children of al-Hassan who will not be mentioned by his Kunya (father or son of so and so) or his name until he will rise with Divine authority to fill the earth with justice after being filled with injustice."
I offer you my greeting of peace O Amir al-Mu’minin عليه السلام and praay to Allah to grant you blessings and holiness." He then stood up and left. Amir al-Mu’minin عليه السلام said, "O Aboo Muhammad follow him and see where went." Al-Hassan ibn `Alee عليه السلام went out to find out (and came back) and said, "As soon as he stepped out of the Mosque I could not figure out in which direction of the earth of Allah did he disappear. I returned to Amir al-Mu’minin عليه السلام and informed him." He said, "O Aboo Muhammad, do you know him?" I said, Allah, the Messenger of Allah and Amir al-Mu’minin عليه السلام know best." He said, "He was al-Khidr عليه السلام "

Here is a breakdown of the sanad (chain of narrators)

Ahmad bin Muhammad Al-Barqee is thiqah (trustworthy) according to:
1.       Ibn Dawood, Rijaal, pg. 40, person # 119
2.      Al-Najaashee, Rijaal, pg. 77, person # 182
3.      Al-Toosi, Fihrist, pg. 53, person # 65
4.      Al-Hillee, Al-KhulaaSah, pg. 15, person # 7
5.      Al-Khoei, Mu`jam Rijaal Al-Hadeeth, vol. 2, pg. 261, person # 858

Dawood bin Al-Qaasim is thiqah according to:
1.       Al-Najaashee, Rijaal, pg. 156, person # 411
2.      Al-Toosi, Fihrist, pg. 182, person # 277

5.      Al-Khoei, Mu`jam Rijaal Al-Hadeeth, vol. 7, pg. 118, person # 4419

As you can see the sanad of this narration is very small because it goes to our 9th Imaam, and the shorter the sanad the better, because it is less likely to have a mistake in transmission since this happens to be a fairly lengthy narration.

  1. I am more towards the view that its not sahih. Bahbudi says:

  2. This SaHiH hadith only exposes the nature of how Twelver Shi`ism is developed. There are hundreds of authentic ahadith indicating the ignorance of the A'immah as well the close companions about such a list with the Twelve names. One example is the pillar of Twelver Shi'ism, Zurarah b. A'yan, who didn't know that Musa b. Ja'far (رحمه الله) was the next Imam after Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (رحمه الله). Twelver scholar Saduq gives the excuse that he did taqiyyah. While the majority said that he is excused since he died while "searching for the new Imam" (like Majlisi said which will follow soon). If such hadith existed, why should the Imam say to Zurarah in a SaHiH hadith the following:

Why would he command him to know his Imam while he could just narrate this hadith with the Twelve names? I mean, it's about Zurarah b. A'yan, the mass narrator of Twelver Shi`ism.

There are Twelve Abwab with respect to the nusus of each Imam regarding their Imamate, why didn't one of them ever present this hadith as hujjah for his Imamate? Not one such hadith is narrated as nass for Imamah, refer to the 12 abwab in al-Kafi, book Hujjah which starts like:
    And so on.

Take this hadith also in consideration, authenticated by Majlisi:

Note the comment of Majlisi and how he uses this SaHiH hadith to save Zurarah b. A'yan from his ignorance about the next Imam after Ja'far al-Sadiq:

    (Continuing next page)

This is only to show the other side of the story, researchers are free to thoroughly research this and decide for their selves.

  3. Bismillah,

Brother, this narration is from the 9th Imam, Imam Muhammad ibn Ali al-Jawad.

Zurara bin `Ayan did recognize the Imaamah of Musa ibn Ja'afar (as).

From a narration from Kitab al-Irshad, the very ending:

"Then we met Zurara and Abu Basir. They went to him, listened to his words and questioned him. They asserted his Imamate. We met wave after wave of the people. Everyone who went to him, declared (his Imamate) except for the group of Ammar al-Sabati. Abd Allah persisted in his claim but only a few of the people came to him."

Just because Sunnis do not see the legitimacy of taqqiya doesn't mean the Imams (ahs) didn't have to employ it and that it isn't a valid reason. If this hadith was mass narrated like you believe it should have been, the oppressors would know who the Imams were and would have killed them.

How unfortunate it is that the Aimmah (as) of the Ahlulbayt of Rasulullah (pbhf) could not speak as freely as him.

    maa Salaama

  4. Asalam Alaikum,

Why there was so much confusion about who will be the next Imam? If they are appointed by Allah, then why there was confusion.

The Ismaelis believed in their Imams after Imam Jafer and many other shia sects.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Oddly there has always been confusion when it's come to the commands of Allah. One thinks of Bani Israel and the way they constantly disobeyed their Prophet, despite clear orders.

  6. By Allah no one undermines ahmed ibn muhamed al-barqi(rta)or any pious shia but a hypocrite. This man Ahsan is not worth the dirt sheikh al-barqi(rta) walks upon. The hadith is sahih indeed without a doubt and bahbudi who is a majhool doesn't have any authority whatsoever and his knowledge of hadith is close to zero as he hasn't got a clear-cut scientific approach in studying hadiths and their asaneed and grading them.

Now the confusion about the imams is a fact and this is the way Allah is testing the believers and these hadiths about the name of the twelves were known to some shia companions of rasool allah and imams but were not publicly declared until later because of fear for the lives of the imams and this hadith in particular was narrated before birth of sahib zaman (as)

    1. Allah SWt "tests" us in muhaqmaat (clear) directives, not in mutashabihaat (allegories or unclear) statements, Quran 3:7. If Allah SWT allegedly commanded the prophet to declare "wilayat" at Ghadeer else the prophet's mission would be null and void, with the promise of protection against opposers, then what hindered Allah SWT from declaring the name of Ali and other Imams in His Book (which Allah also protects).

  7. Assalaamu 'Alaykum,

Bahboodee's opinion on this is very shaadh (odd). It shouldn't be taken. No other old school scholar has even came out with this opinion. Al-Kulaynee has put this hadeeth in his Al-Kaafee, as well as, Shaykh Sadooq has put this hadeeth in Kamaal al-Deen.

Bahboodee grades Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Barqee da'eef, which NO smart minded scholar would ever do.

Some people's contention is that Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Barqee narrated from Du'afaa`? Then why does he narrate this hadeeth from a thiqah narrator (Daawood bin Al-Qaasim: Graded by Majlisee, Najaashee, Toosee, Hillee, Khu'ee)? If I wanted to go through all the narrators Ahmad narrates from that are thiqah, I am sure I can give you a laundry list, but that is not the aim of this post.

The full sanad to this hadeeth is SAHEEH, also the tareeq to Shaykh Sadooq is SaHeeH (according to Khu'ee):

    Narrators in this hadeeth:
    Shaykh Sadooq's father
    Muhammad bin al-Hasan (ibn Waleed)
    Sa'd bin 'Abd Allaah
    'Abd Allaah bin Ja'far al-Himyaree
    Muhammad bin YaHyaa al-aTTaar
    Ahmad bin Idrees
    Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Barqee
    Dawood bin Al-Qaasim

Also, there is another tareeq to Dawood from Shaykh Sadooq in Al-TawHeed:

    This is also SaHeeH.

He has another chain in 'ilal al-sharaa`3:

    This is also SaHeeH.

This is not the only time the chain (for the 12 Imaam hadeeth) has been used by the way. This chain is also narrated in Wasaa'il al-Shee'ah by Shaykh Hurr al-'Aamilee (vol. 7, pg. 199), who takes from the book of 'Uyoon al Akhbaar by Shaykh Sadooq.

By the way, Bahboodee then says, on the same page of his book Ma'rifah al-Hadeeth, that Dawood bin al-Qaasim only gave to Du'afaa` and didn't give to approved thiqah narrators (he puts Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Barqee under the Du'afaa`)...

  8. I went through some ahaadeeth in Wasaa'il. Here are some of the thiqaat he gives to (Graded thiqah by the ijma' of the scholars):
    Ibraaheem bin Haashim
    Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Barqee
    Zakariya bin YaHya al-Tameemee

Now thiqaat he gave to in Al-Kaafee:
    Muhammad bin 'Eesa
    Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Barqee

In 'ilaam al-wara by FaDl bin Hasan al-Tabarsee, he gives to:
    Sa'd bin 'Abd Allaah
    Ibraaheem bin Haashim
    'Abd Allaah bin Ja'far al-Himyaree

Considering Dawood doesn't have many ahaadeeth anyways, these 7 different thiqaat people are more than I have seen him give to da'eef narrators.

Also notice that he gets from the best of the best narrators, which makes sense that this hadeeth which has all the 12 Imaams names be put in there. You would want your best of the best narrators to keep such a hadeeth.

Finally, Dawood isn't only getting stuff directly from the Imaams (AS). It is also possible that he is getting stuff from 'Alee bin Mahziyaar, who is also thiqah. And 'Alee bin Mahziyaar is getting things from the book of Imaam Baaqir (AS). (Wasaa'il al-Shee'ah, vol. 23, pg. 264)

Also, here is another narration from Kashshee's pg. 447 rijaal with a SaHeeH isnaad, speaking about a book from Yoonus bin 'Abd al-RaHmaan, who is thiqah, that Daawood bin al-Qaasim had:

In a way this also gives Yoonus bin 'Abd al-RaHmaan's works more tawtheeq, it says to praise him alot.

All in all, there is not much evidence to overturn the NaSS of the 12 Imaam hadeeth. If anything, the evidence is very substantial for this hadeeth to be accepted. One who does not accept this hadeeth, has not accepted Shee'ah Islaam and has called a SaHeeH narration da'eef.

  9. Alsalam alaykum all,

Interesting stuff you folks have here. I've been reading up on this hadith and there seems to be some more evidence against it. The most obvious one is the opinion of Mohammed bin Yahya after the end of the second hadith where he says he wishes this hadith wasn't narrated by Al-Barqi.

It isn't necessarily because he is a liar, but maybe it is because of the excessive mursal narrations.

Here is something from Al-Mahasin to ponder over:

    Check the chain. ;)
