Narjis' (Mother of 12th Imaam) story is mawDoo' (Fabricated)

Salaamun 'Alaykum,

Here is the famous story of the Narjis, mother of Imaam Mahdee (AS) being a Roman princess and being sold into slavery in order to marry our 11th Imaam (AS). Her name is really Narjis, but the LONG story of her being a Roman princess and being sold into slavery is mawDoo’ (Fabricated).

Here are the sources to this hadeeth:
1. Al-Sadooq, Kamaal Al-Deen, vol. 2, ch. 41, pg. 417 - 423, hadeeth # 1
2. Al-Toosi, Ghaybah Al-Toosi, pg. 208
3. Al-Majlisi, Bihaar Al-Anwaar, vol. 51, ch. 1, pg. 6 - 10, hadeeth # 12

Here is the sanad (chain of narrators) to the story. (taken from Bihaar Al-Anwaar)

Abee / Aboo Al-MufaDDal Al-Shaybaanee (Muhammad bin 'Abd Allaah Aboo Al-MufaDDal) is Da'eef (Weak) according to:
1. Al-Najaashee, Rijaal, pg. 396
2. Al-Hillee, Al-KhulaaSah, pg. 256 & pg. 252
3. Al-GhaDaa-iree, Kitaab Al-Du'afaa, pg. 99

6. Al-Khoei, Mu'jam Rijaal Al-Hadeeth, vol. 16, pg. 444, person # 11115

Muhammad bin BaHr bin Sahl Al-Shaybaanee is Ghullah (exaggerator) & MufawwiDa according to:
1. Al-Toosi, Rijaal, pg. 447
2. Al-Hillee, Al-KhulaaSah, pg. 254
3. Al-Toosi, Fihrist, pg. 390

6. Al-Khoei, Mu'jam Rijaal Al-Hadeeth, vol. 15, pg. 122, person # 10297

Bishr bin Sulaymaan Al-Nakhaas is Majhool (Unknown) according to:
1. Al-Khoei, Mu'jam Rijaal Al-Hadeeth, vol. 3, pg. 316, person # 1755

Based off of this sanad (chain of narrators), this hadeeth is graded as MawDoo' (Fabricated) or at least a minimum of Da'eef Jiddan (VERY WEAK).

Also, here is what Al-Khoei has said regarding this hadeeth / story under Bishr bin Sulaymaan.
"But the sanad (chain of narrators) in the hadeeth / story has many majhool (unknown) people, and you know that it one cannot establish his own trustworthiness through his own narration about himself"Source:
1. Al-Khoei, Mu'jam Rijaal Al-Hadeeth, vol. 3, pg. 316, person # 1755

One of the reasons for this fabricated story could be to make the mother of our 12th Imaam (AS) come from a noble lineage as his father (Imaam Al-'Askaree (AS)) is already from a noble lineage.

Al-Kulaynee has added a tradition in Al-Kaafi that alludes to the mother of Imaam Mahdee (AS) being from Al-Nawbah, which is in Sudan, but this hadeeth is mursal (disconnected) and cannot be used as daleel (proof) (See: Al-Kaafi, vol. 5, pg. 352, hadeeth # 2). There have been other aHaadeeth that shows the mother of Imaam Mahdee (AS) being a black slave, but the authenticity of these reports has not been determined. Wallaahu A'lim (And Allaah knows best).

Tafseer Al-'Askaree (AS) is mawDoo' (fabricated)

Click Here to download this article in PDF format.

Unfortunately, I have noticed that a lot of people on here and various places seem to take out the Tafseer that has been attributed to Imaam Hasan Al-'Askaree. Even so much that Al-Khoei Bookstore is selling the tafseer on their website, here.

What we must know and remember is that this Tafseer is mawDoo’ (fabricated) and da’eef (weak) under the name of Imaam Hasan Al-'Askaree

Let me mention to you the chain of narrators from whom we've received this Tafseer. This is mentioned in the beginning of the book, Tafseer Al-Imaam Al-'Askaree.

Muhammad bin 'Alee bin Muhammad bin Ja'far bin Daqaaq said: "The two jurisprudent sheikhs Aboo Al-Hasan Muhammad bin Ahmad bin 'Alee bin al-Hasan bin Shaadhaan and Aboo Muhammad Ja’far bin Ahmad bin 'Alee Al-Qummee told me from Aboo Ja'far Muhammad bin 'Alee bin Al-Husayn bin Moosa bin Baabuwayh Al-Qummee told me from Aboo Al-Hasan Muhammad bin Al-Qaassim Al-Mufassir Al-Astr'aabaadhee Al-KhaTeeb (preacher) that Aboo Ya’qoob Yoosuf bin Muhammad bin Ziyaad and Abo Al-Hasan Ali bin Muhammad bin Sayyaar"

Then a story is narrated how they were in the company of Imaam Hasan Al-'Askaree.
Translation: "Who were from the Shee'ah Imaami, said, ‘Our parents were Twelver Shia. The Zaydees were prevailing in Astr'aabaad. We were under the rule of Al-Hasan bin Zayd Al-'Alawi called as Al-Daa’ee ilal-Haqq. He was the Imam of the Zaydees. He often listened to them (the Zaydees) and killed people according to their slanders. We feared for ourselves , and so we resorted with our families to HaDrah Al-Imam Aboo Muhammad Al-Hasan bin 'Alee bin Muhammad the father of al-Qa’im (Imam al-Mahdi)."

Yes, it is true that Al-Majlisi quotes from this Tafseer all over Bihaar Al-Anwaar, that doesn't mean that he "accepts" it as the Tafseer Attributed to our 11th Imaam.

I respect all of our great scholars, but what we must know about hadeeth is that it is called 'Ilm Al-Hadeeth. Some people have translated it to "Science of Al-Hadeeth". The reason why it is called "Science" is because it is supposed to be unbiased and objective. What this means is, whichever scholars has said something good about this tafseer and whichever scholar has said this is our 11th Imaam tafseer, we must find out for ourselves about this hadeeth.

Let's find out for ourselves about this tafseer.

We must first examine the 2 people who "claim" that they've heard this tafseer directly from our 11th Imaam. Those 2 people are:

First Person: Yoosuf bin Muhammad bin Ziyaad
Second Person: 'Alee bin Muhammad bin Sayyaar

The first book I looked at was Rijaal Al-Toosi. The reason is, I wanted to see if these 2 men have even been mentioned as one of the companions of our 11th Imaam. Let alone if they are Thiqah (trustworthy) or Da'eef (weak).

1.) Yoosuf ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyaad is nowhere to be found.
Source:
1.     Al-Toosi, Rijaal, pg. 403, under the Chapter of "Imaam Abee Muhammad Hasan ibn 'Alee bin Muhammad bin 'Alee Al-RiDaa", under section of "Ya"

2.) 'Alee bin Muhammad bin Sayyaar is also no where to be found.
Source:
1.     Al-Toosi, Rijaal, pg. 429 - 435, under the Chapter of "Imaam Abee Muhammad Hasan ibn 'Alee bin Muhammad bin 'Alee Al-RiDaa", under section of 'Ayn

There is mention of these two people in the Rijaal book, but not in a good light.

Translation: Muhammad bin Al-Qaasim, Al-Mufassir, al-Astarabadi. Aboo Ja`far b. Baabuwayh narrated from him. Weak, and a liar. He narrated a tafseer from him that he narrated from two unknown men: one of them known as Yoosuf bin Muhammad bin Ziyaad, and `Alee bin Muhammad bin Yaasar (mispell: it should be Sayyaar), from their father from Aboo Al-Hasan the Third. The tafseer is fabricated (mawDoo') from Sahl Al-Dibaajee from his father with aHaadeeth from these disgraceful people.
Source:
1.     Ibn Al-GhaDaa’iree, Kitaab Al-Du`afaa, pg. 98
2.     Al-Hillee, Al-KhulaaSah, pg. 287

There are some things wrong with what is said by Ibn Al-GhaDaa'iri and 'Allaamah Hilli who quotes from Ibn Al-GhaDaa'iri.

1.)  He says that Yoosuf ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyaad and 'Alee ibn Muhammad ibn Sayyaar narrate from their fathers
--> this is wrong because as you see from the chain of narrators, they do not narrate from their fathers, they have no "middle man" to get to the Imaam.

2.)  Also he says the tafseer is attributed to Aboo Al-Hasan the third which is our 10th Imaam.
--> this is wrong because the tafseer is attributed to our 11th Imaam and not our 10th Imaam.

3.)  He also says he got from Sahl Al-Dibaajee
--> As you can see in the chain of narrators Sahl Al-Dibaajee is not even mentioned.

According to Al-Khoei, he says this about these 2 narrators (Yoosuf ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyaad & 'Alee ibn Muhammad ibn Sayyaar)

Yoosuf ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyaad
Translation: I (Al-Khoei) say: “This man's condition is majhool (unknown).”
Source:
1.     Al-Khoei, Mu'jam Rijaal Al-Hadeeth, vol. 20, pg. 175, under person # 13809

Al-Khoei also says:

As you can see since the main two people who "claim" that they narrate this tafseer directly from our 11th Imaam is "unknown" we cannot take anything from this tafseer. In the science of Hadeeth, when you have just ONE majhool (unknown) narrator whether he be the narrator or the sub-narrator. The hadeeth is automatically deemed as Da'eef (weak).

Now, in this tafseer, the main narrators who directly here it from the 11th Imaam
(عليه السلام) are majhool (weak). These people are equivalent to Aboo BaSeer & Zurarah to our 5th and 6th Imaam (عليه السلام). So for them to be unknown puts the WHOLE tafseer as weak.

Another way you can tell that this Tafseer is fabricated is, our 11th Imaam was surrounded by policemen and under cover agents of the Abbasid government. Also during the reign of Al-Musta'een our 11th Imaam
(عليه السلام) was put in prison of 'Alee ibn Awtamish. It is almost impossible for someone to be with our 11th Imaam (عليه السلام) for so long to the point that this Tafseer is about 700 pages long! And for these two people to be considered majhool (unknown) to the Rijaal authors is really weird!
Here are the Caliphs that our 11th Imaam went through
1.      Al-Mutawakkil: He hated shee'ahs extremely, he assumed the role of caliph the same year our 11th Imaam was born (see: Tareekh Al-Khulafaa by Al-Suyootee). He didn't live too long. No praise or kunya coming from him.
2.     Al-Muntasir: This was the ONLY caliph who was good to the Shee'ahs, and he didn't live very long because the Turks killed him. (See: Tareekh Al-Khulafaa, pg. 357 by Al-Suyootee). Also, in the books of history, there is NO mention of our 11th Imaam and Al-Muntasir meeting face-to-face, so that'll put big doubts into this tradition.
3.     Al-Musta'een: He hated our Imaam bitterly, to the point he put our Imaam in prison. No praise or kunya coming from him.
4.     Al-Mu'tazz: He hated the our Imaam (AS) as well. He once tried to assassinate him, but failed. (See: Dalaa-il Imaamah). He was killed by the Turks over money.
5.     Al-Muhtadi: He hated our Imaam (AS) also, he put our 11th Imaam (AS) in prison. (See: Muhaj Al-Da'waat). He was killed by the turks also.
6.     Al-Mu'tamid: Our Imaam (AS) was put into prison ONCE again, but this time at the hands of Al-Mu'tamid. He hated our Imaam (AS). He put undercover agents with the Imaam, and remained under heavy watch. And then he was assassinated by POISON by this caliph.

One of the reasons why he was surrounded by policemen and undercover agents was because they knew that his (AS) son would be the awaiting Al-Mahdee (AS) that has been foretold by the Prophet (SAWAS). Even logically, this tafseer couldn't be true.

Another way you can tell that this Tafseer is not from our 11th Imaam (AS) is because the language and manner that this tafseer is mentioned is not eloquent. If you delve deep into its arabic, you will see it is not as eloquent as it is suppose to be since it is coming from one of our Imaams. There is this famous hadeeth in Al-Kaafi, that I would like to narrate.
Translation: Once, Abu 'Abdullah (Ja'far as-Saadiq) said: "Express our hadeeth (sayings) in a clear manner; (for) we are of the people of eloquence"
Source:
1.     Al-Kulayni, Al-Kaafi, vol. 1, ch. 17, pg. 52, hadeeth # 13
Grading:
1.       Al-Majlisi said this hadeeth is SaHeeH (Authentic)
à Mir'aat Al-'Uqool, vol. 1, pg. 182
2.     Bahboodee said this hadeeth is SaHeeH (Authentic)
à SaHeeH Al-Kaafi, vol. 1, pg. 7

So it is impossible for this to be attributed to one of our Imaams, because the language in which it is written is not eloquent at all.

Scholarly opinion regarding the tafseer:
“The narrated is weak in the sanad because the Tafseer that has been attributed to Al-`Askaree wasn't
proven to be as such through a correct way, for there are several majhool narrators like
Muhammad bin Al-Qaasim Al-Astraabaadee, Yoosuf bin Muhammad bin Ziyaad, and 'Alee bin
Muhammad Sayyaar, so one would notice that when Al-Saduq mentions the tafseer through
Mohammed bin Al-Qasim Al-Asterabadi, and it appears to be a volume long which is what one
would observe from the copy that has reached us today”
Source:

I say: This evidence isn't all that bad, and there are other elements that point to the authenticity of
this report, so, it isn't a problem that this chain is weak because it is attributed to the Tafseer of Al
Askari, and the attribution (to al-`Askari) is not proven.

This tafseer as it is in our hands now contains statements like Sayyari’s book should be discredited. There is no doubt that the eleventh Imaam dictated a brief commentary of the Qur’an to some of his disciples who had approached him when he was in Samarrah under house arrest. The dictation undoubtedly was of great value but it was tampered with before its publication. The person accused of this profane act is Ahmad bin Sahl Deebaji.”

I hope this clarifies for people about this Tafseer that has been attributed to our 11th Imaam (عليه السلام) and that it is fabricated. Thank you.

Chess is Haraam!

Salaamun 'Alaykum,

Lately I have been noticing a lot of scholars and people say that chess is halaal now.

I have produced a document in which I have narrated SaHeeH hadeeth that shows the prohibition of chess. There is more than just one reason for the prohibition of chess, it was not only prohibited because it was a "gambling" tool, as many scholars say.

3rd Testimony in Adhaan and Iqaamah = Bid'ah (Innovation)

Click Here to download this article in PDF format.

Salaamun 'Alaykum,

What do I mean by 3rd Testimony in Adhaan and Iqaamah? I am talking about the saying, "أشهد أن علي ولي الله" or any other variation that is said about Imaam 'Alee (AS) during the adhaan.

The first thing I would like to mention is that the issue of the 3rd testimony in the Adhaan/Iqaamah was condemned by ALL major scholars before Al-Majlisi's father (Muhammad Taqee Al-Majlsi) who died in the year 1080 AH (See: Al-Majlisi I, RawDah Al-Muttaqoon). Al-Majlisi backed up his father and said that doing this 3rd testimony in the adhaan / iqaamah is a great act.

So for 1000 years, this issue was either condemned, called a bid'ah, calling the people who do this action a form of ghullah (exaggerator), or simply hasn't even been mentioned in their books(for it wasn't important).

There are 0 (zero) SaHeeH hadeeth from Shee'ah books that says that it is permissible to add the 3rd testimony in Adhaan or Iqaamah. Or ANY hadeeth that says that it is mustahab (recommended), or anything that says "do it with the intention of it NOT being part of the adhaan/iqaamah". None. Zero. Nada.

I would like to narrate a muwaththaq (reliable) hadeeth directly from Imaam Muhammad Al-Baaqir (AS) where he talks about how many parts / phrases are in the Adhaan.
He (AS) said: The Adhaan and the Iqaamah have 35 characters/parts, just check it by his hand one by one, the adhaan has 18 characters/parts and the Iqaamah has 17 characters/parts."
Source:
· Al-Kaafi, Al-Kulaynee, vol. 3, pg. 302 - 303, hadeeth # 3
Grading:
· Al-Majlisi has said this hadeeth is Muwwaththaq (Reliable)
--> Mir'aat Al-'Uqool, vol. 15, pg. 82

Now if you were to add the 3rd testimony in the Adhaan & Iqaamah, the Adhaan would consist of 20 part and the Iqaamah would consist of19 parts. These two combined would make it 39 parts, and as you can see the Imaam (AS) never said anything about that.
Let us look to the major scholars of Shee'ah Islaam pre-Majlisis.

(Taken from my personal copy of Al-Sadooq's Man Laa YaHDuruh Al-Faqeeh, vol. 1, Chapter: Adhaan and Iqaamah, Etiquettes of Women in Salaah, pg. 112 - 113)

1.) Here is what Al-Sadooq (d. 381 AH) has said concerning the 3rd testimony. Here are his actual words.
Translation: "This is the Authentic / Correct (SaHeeH) adhaan; nothing is to be added or subtracted from it. The mufawwidah's (form of ghullah), may Allaah curse them, have fabricated traditions and have added to the adhaan (Muhammad and the family of Muhammad are the best of mankind) twice. In some of their traditions, after saying (I bear witness that Muhammad is the Prophet of Allaah) (they add) (I bear witness that 'Alee is the Walee of Allaah) twice. Among them there are others who narrate this (I bear witness that 'Alee is the commander of the faithfull) twice. There is NO doubt that 'Alee is the walee of God and that he is the true commander of the faithful and that Muhammad and his family, peace be upon them, are the best of creatures. However, that is not [part] of the original adhaan. I have mentioned this so that those who have been accused of concocting tafweed and have insulated themselves in our ranks should be known."

Translation: "The are some odd (shaadh) reports of saying أشهد انّ عليا وليّ اللّه and آل محمّد خير البريّة. You must NOT do it in the Adhaan and Iqaamah. And whoever does this action is in mukhTi (error)"

3b.) Here is another quote from Al-Toosi regarding the 3rd testimony in Adhaan.

Translation: It is not from amongst the faDeelah (recommended parts) of Adhaan and it doesn't make it more complete (Kaamil)

4a.) Another source where Al-Muhaqqiq Al-Hillee (d. 767 AH) talks about the adhaan & iqaamah but doesn't even mention the 3rd testimony

Translation: The adhaan has 18 parts: Takbeer 4 times, Witnessing to Tawheed, (Witnessing) to the Prophethood, Hayya 'Ala Salaah, Hayyah 'Ala FlaaH, Hayyah 'Ala Khayrul 'Amal, Takbeer all of these have to be done twice.

4b.) Here is what Al-Muhaqqiq Al-Hillee had to say about anything added to the adhaan & iqaamah (he mentions the adhaan & iqaamah and the 3rd testimony is not there)
Chapter Title is
(The Adhaan has 18 (parts), and the Iqaamah has 17 (parts)

Translation: "And anything that is added to this (adhaan & iqaamah) is a bid'ah"

5.) Here is what 'Allaamah Hillee (d. 726 AH) has said about the 3rd testimony in the Adhaan and Iqaamah

Translation: "And it is NOT permissible to say إن عليا ولي اللَّه and آل محمد خير البرية since there is no ruling for it in the sharee'ah"

6.) Here is what Shaheed Al-Awwal (d. 786 AH) has said about the 3rd testimony in Adhaan.

Translation: "It is NOT permissible to believe in the legitimacy of Witnessing the Wilaayah of 'Alee and "Muhammad wa Aalih Khayrul Bariyyah" in the adhaan and iqaamah, even though these events are factual!

7a.) Here is what Shaheed Al-Thaanee (d. 966 AH) has said about 3rd testimony in Adhaan.

Translation: It is NOT permissible to believe in legitimacy of other parts in adhaan and iqaamah, like witnessing to wilaayah of 'Alee and "muhammad wa aalihi khayrul bariyyah". As not EVERY factual reality can be inserted into the legally prescribed rituals ('ibaadaat), specified by the Allaah (SWT), since inserting theses things will be regarded as bi'dah and legislation, similar to addition of a rak'ah or tashahhud or alike things to the acts of worship ('ibaadaat)"

7b.) Another source for Shaheed Al-Thaanee talking about 3rd testimony in Adhaan & Iqaamah

Translation: "And addition (to the adhaan & iqaamah) of عليّاً وليّ اللّه and آل محمّد خير البريّة is a bid'ah and the narrations regarding it (3rd testimony) is mawDoo' (fabricated)."

8.) Here is what Al-Muqqadis Al-Ardabillee (d. 993 AH) has said regarding the 3rd testimony (he has said this after he quotes Al-Sadooq calling them MufawwiDas)

Rough Translation: Since the shee'ahs condemn the 2nd ('Umar) for adding to the Adhaan that wasn't during the time of the Prophet, it is improper for them to emulate such an act (by adding the 3rd testimony).

Now, look at what a during the time of Al-Majlisi, after he said it is okay to put it in the Adhaan.

9.) Here is what Al-Muhaqqiq Al-Sabzawaaree (d. 1090 AH) had to say about the 3rd testimony in Adhaan.

Translation: "And about adding the أنّ عليّا وليّ اللَّه and آل محمّد خير البريّة , the jurists have clearly stated that this is a bid'ah. And the statement is true. But adding it to the adhaan is dependent upon its divine ordainment. (al-tawqeef al-shar'ee)"

As you can see, our major scholars that came before the Al-Majlisis condemned this action.

Even Al-Khomeinee talks about the aHaadeeth that allude to the 3rd testimony in Adhaan and Iqaamah.

"In some Da'eef (untrustworthy / weak) narratives it is stated that after testifying to the Messengership in the adhan one is to say: "I testify that 'Ali is waliyullah (Allah's friend)" twice. In other narratives, one is to say: "I testify that 'Ali is truly Amirul Mu'minin" twice. In some others, one is to say: "Muhammad and his progeny are the best of people". Ash-Shaykh as-Saduq(may Allah have mercy upon him) took these narratives to be invented and he denied them. It is well known among the 'ulama' (may Allah be pleased with them) that these narratives are not reliable."

But unfortunately, even after Al-Khomeinee admits there are no SaHeeH hadeeth about this,
he tries to present a hadeeth, the very same hadeeth that Al-Majlisi has used to add the 3rd
testimony in Adhaan. Here is the hadeeth.

Translation: I said to Aboo 'Abd Allaah (6th Imaam), that they (sunnees) trasmit a tradtion in their [books about] mi'raaj, that when the Prophet (SAWAS) was taken on the night of ascension he saw writing on the throne which read, "There is no God, but Allaah, Muhammad is the Prophet of God and Aboo Bakr is the truthful one." Imaam Al-Saadiq (AS) said: "SubHaanallaah (Glory be to Allaah), they have changed EVERYTHING including this?" Al-Qaasim said: "Yes", Imaam Saadiq (AS) said: "When Allaah (SWT), created the throne he wrote on it: "There is no god, but Allaah and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allaah and 'Alee is Ameer Al-Mu-mineen......the tradtion goes on until Imaam Saadiq (AS) at the end says this..."Whenever one of you recites the Shahadatayn, say 'Alee is Ameer Al-Mu'mineen."

2. Al-Majlisi, Bihaar Al-Anwaar, vol. 27, ch. 10, pg. 1, hadeeth #1
3. Al-Majlisi, Bihaar Al-Anwaar, vol. 81, ch. 13, pg. 112, hadeeth #1

There are A LOT of things wrong with this hadeeth itself and the way it is used as a proof (for 3rd testimony):
1. This hadeeth is not found in any other book before Al-Tabarasee narrates it in his book (Al-Ihtijaaj).
2. There is no sanad (chain of narrators) that is accompanied with this hadeeth, just the primary narrator
3. The primary narrator is HIGHLY majhool (unknown)
a. There are 0 (zero) hadeeth from this specific narrator in our Kutub Al-Arba’ (Al-Kaafi, Al-Faqeeh, Tahdheeb & Al-IstibSaar) or Wasaa-il Al-Shee’ah
b. The ONLY hadeeth that is narrated from this narrator is this specific hadeeth

It is very unlikely that a person just appears and narrates a lengthy hadeeth like this and then disappears. Since this hadeeth is talking against the Sunnees and Aboo Bakr, it would seem that the companion had to be VERY close to the Imaam (AS), that he would trust him. Usually our Imaams (AS) would do taqiyyah (dissimulation), and only narrate such hadeeth with their close companions.

One thing to note, this hadeeth has NOTHING to do with Adhaan and Iqaamah. In order to "add" things into you 'ibaadah, you must have tawqeef (divine ordainment), meaning there has to be a SaHeeH hadeeth from the Prophet (SAWAS) or the Imaams (AS) that allow this.
In conclusion, doing the 3rd testimony in the adhaan / iqaamah is reprehensible bid'ah (innovation), that must be stopped immediately. Doesn't matter what "intention" you say it. A bid'ah is a bid'ah.

Wa 'Alaykum Assalaam
