Surahs to Recite in Salat / Namaz

Here are two Authentic aHaadeeth showing us what the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to recite in his Salaah. I have made a blog post titled “Excellence of Memorizing the Qur’aan”, so if we do not have these Surahs memorized, inshaa’Allaah we can try to memorize them.

From `Eesa bin `Abd Allaah Al-Qummee from Abee `Abd Allaah (عليه السلام) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to pray Al-Ghadaa’ (Al-Fajr) with `Amma Yatasaa’aloon (Surah Al-Naba’ – No. 78), Hal Ataaka Hadeeth Al-Ghaashiyah (Surah Al-Ghaashiyah – No. 88), Laa Uqsimu bi-yamil qiyaamah (Surah Al-Qiyaamah – No. 75) and similar ones (that are like those surahs). And he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to pray Al-Dhuhr with SabbiHisma (Surah Al-`Ala – No. 87), wa Al-Shams wa Al-DuHaahaa (No. 91), Hal Ataaka Hadeeth Al-Ghaashiyah (Surah Al-Ghaashiyah – No. 88) and similar ones (that are like those surahs). And he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to pray Al-Maghrib with Qul Huwa Allaahu aHad (Surah Al-IkhlaaS – No. 112), Idhaa Jaa’a NaSrullaahi wa al-fatH (Surah Al-NaSr – No. 110), Idhaa Zulzilat (Surah Zilzalah – No. 99). And he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) used to pray the final Al-`Ishaa’ with the same of what he recited in Al-Dhuhr, and (he used to pray) Al-`aSr with the same (surahs he recited in) Al-Maghrib.

Everything is in Qur'an and Sunnah

Here is a Muwaththaq (Reliable) hadeeth from our A’immah (عليهم السلام) that shows that everything is in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم).

From Samaa`ah from Abee Al-Hasan Moosa (عليه السلام) said, I said to him (عليه السلام): “Is everything in the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of his Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), or do you have a say in it?” He (عليه السلام) said: “Rather, everything is in the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of his Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)

'Aql (Intellect)

Here is a SaHeeH (Authentic) hadeeth about the importance of having `aql (intellect). The chain of narrators in this hadeeth is impeccable.

From `Abd Allaah bin Sinaan said I asked Abaa `Abd Allaah Ja`far bin Muhammad Al-Saadiq (عليه السلام) , so I said who is better the angels or the children of Adam? So he (عليه السلام) said, Ameer Al-Mu’mineen (عليه السلام) said: “Verily, Allaah (عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ) has constructed in angels `aql and no lust, and He has constructed in animals lust and no `aql, and He has constructed in the children of Adam both of those. So whoever can overcome his lust with his `aql is better than the angels and whoever lets his lust overcome his `aql is worse than animals”

Ahlul Bid'ah

Her is a SaHeeH (Authentic) hadeeth showing the view of the Ahl Al-Bayt (عليهم السلام) against Ahl Al-Bid`ah (People of Innovation). Within this hadeeth it has the famous narration from the Prophet This hadeeth shows us that we must watch out who we befriend and associate with.

From `Umar bin Yazeed from Abee `Abd Allaah (عليه السلام) that he said: “Do not befriend the Ahl Al-Bid`ah (People of Innovation), and do not sit with them, so you may become like one of them (according) to the people. The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘A man is upon the religion of his friends and associates’”

Merits of Surah Kahf

Here is a SaHeeH (Authentic) hadeeth that talks about the great merits we will attain if we were to read Soorah Al-Kahf (18) during Friday night, which is Thursday night for people who use the Gregorian calendar.

From Muhammad bin Abee Hamzah said, Aboo `Abd Allaah (عليه السلام) said: “Whoever recited Soorah Al-Kahf on every Friday night (i.e. Thursday night for Gregorian calendars) it will be an atonement (for sins) for what is between Jumu`ah (Friday) to (the next) Jumu`ah (Friday)”

Bad Dreams

Here is a Hasan (Good) hadeeth where our A’immah (عليه السلام) have told us what to do and say when we have a bad dream, which happens to all of us.

(Taken from my personal copy of Al-Kaafi, vol. 8, pg. 123, hadeeth # 106)

From Mu`aawiyah bin `Ammaar from Abee `Abd Allaah (عليه السلام) said: “When a man sees what he dislikes in a dream, he should change from his position which he was sleeping (previously). And he (should) say:

‘Verily, secrets are from ShayTaan (Satan) to sadden those who believe. He cannot harm them except by the permission of Allaah’. [Soorah Al-Mujaadilah (58):Verse 10]

Then he (should) say: ‘I seek protection by which the close angels of Allaah, the prophets, the messengers and His righteous servants seek protection from evil of what I have seen and from the evil of ShayTaan, the accursed’”

Signs of the Day of Judgment

Here is a Hasan (Good) hadeeth that talks about the many different signs of the Day of Judgment. After reading this hadeeth you will notice that majority if not all the signs of the Day of Judgment are being seen today. This is an extremely lengthy hadeeth, I will ONLY narrate the part where the Imaam talks about the different signs.

This hadeeth goes through two chains, after narrating the hadeeth I will go into an in depth analysis of one of the chains that is authentic.

From Humraan (bin A`yan) said, Aboo `Abd Allaah (عليه السلام) said: “…
